Conflict Resolution Principles

Biblical principles are foundational

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105 (KJV)

The biblical principles behind the process include…

  • Honesty: Lies and half-truths violate trust and prevent communication. (1 John 3:18)
  • Personal responsibility: Each of us has a choice in responding to conflict. At Conflict to Peace, we help you get to the heart of what drives your choices and encourage everyone to accept responsibility for those choices and their impact. (Matthew 7:5, Proverbs 28:13)
  • Respect for one another: Respectful and grace filled communication is essential to productive dialogue about a dispute. This includes not only how we speak but also how we listen to each other. Respectful communication involves seeking understanding of the other person’s perspective with an open mind and communicating one’s own perspective with words and manner that facilitate the other party’s willingness to listen. (Ephesians 4:29-32, Proverbs 12:18 and 18:13)
  • Transparent motivation: Conflicts have root causes stemming from motives, desires, attitudes and idols. Motives and desires do not have to be wrong to lead to conflict — all it takes is for pursuit of a desire to become more important than how we are to live in relationship with one other. (James 4:1-3)
  • Deference: The interests of all impacted by the conflict must be considered. (Romans 12:3, Philippians 2:3-4, James 3:14)
  • Vulnerability Your openness to forgiveness and reconciliation promotes resolution. Approaching others with a forgiving rather than a judgmental spirit is a key to opening opportunity for peace. (Matthew 5:23-4) (Mark 11:25) (Colossians 3:12-15)
